Seaside Life Photography
My street photography hero is the late, great Tony Ray-Jones — the inspiration behind Martin Parr and almost every other serious observer of the British at the seaside. I don’t spend much time at the beach myself, but these are my observations when I do. The English, it turns out, are reliably peculiar in a seaside context, regardless of whether the weather warrants it.
South Africa, it happens, is quite close to how a British beach may have felt in the 1950s — so it offers a fruitful hunting ground for this kind of seaside life photography, if you like that sort of thing. The cameras here include a Fuji X-T1, a Nikon 1 V1, and various Sony NEX bodies; the subjects include sunbathers, paddle-boarders, birds, and the reliably photogenic business of doing very little by the sea.
Photographs in this album include: A lovely day out, The English at rest, Faster faster, Fancy a beer?, The birds, Dawn treader, Our day at the beach, Recent trends in beach worship, Kneeling, and A study in speedos.
