Apulia – Street and Beach Photography
In July 2017, a longish trip with family to the Adriatic coast of Italy — most of the time spent in the province of Apulia (Puglia), which has the longest coastline of any Italian region, running from the spectacular Gargano peninsula all the way down to the boot heel. Seascape images from the trip are collected in a separate album.
Two cameras were brought for the street work: the Olympus E-M1 Mk II for the main kit, and the Panasonic Lumix GM5 as a permanent carry specifically for street photography. The GM5 is one of the smallest interchangeable-lens cameras ever made — small enough to be truly unobtrusive — and both it and the E-M1 share the same Micro Four Thirds lens mount, so the same optics served both.
Being Italy, street opportunities came readily: a sinister-looking group of post-prandial priests in Trani, early morning light in the ancient streets of Bari, and a completely unexpected wedding in Lecce, photographed from above from the apartment balcony. The Lecce sequence is one of the more unusual wedding sets — the guests were entirely relaxed about being photographed and even posed for group shots.
