Gartered Trogon Displaying Its Barred Tail in the Arenal Forest
A male Gartered Trogon (Trogon caligatus) twists among the branches at Arenal Observatory Lodge with one wing arched overhead and its black-and-white barred tail opened behind the yellow belly. The frontal angle brings the pale bill, bright yellow eye ring and dark head into direct view while the blue-green breast flashes between leaves. The encounter was especially memorable because the guide reported never having seen this species at the location before. At 1/4000 second, f/5.6 and ISO 6400, the exposure holds the fast wing and tail movement sharply in the broken canopy light without flash.
