Male Flame-colored Tanager Flying from a Tree at Batsu Gardens
A male Flame-colored Tanager launches beside a trunk with a small white fragment in its bill, one warm red-orange wing and its bold white bars fully displayed at Batsu Gardens in Costa Rica. The male combines orange-red plumage with dusky wings and bold pale wing bars, a characteristic highland tanager pattern. The exposure of 1/4000 sec, f/5.6 and ISO 3200 freezes the decisive body position and separates the principal wing and tail feathers while retaining only fine traces of motion at the fastest edges; the photograph was made in natural light without flash.
